January 2018 in film. A summary.

It has been a strong start to the year for movies.

Here is Dave Howarth's monthly round up -

The Greatest Showman - Absurdly OTT and really enjoyable, if you like musicals set in the mid-1800s, starring Hugh Jackman. 8/10

Hostiles - Set in the post-Civil War era, Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike’s paths meet in this dramatic Western about America’s violent past. 8/10

Molly’s Game - Aaron Sorkin. Jessica Chastain. Idris Elba. Teaming up to tell the true story of Molly Bloom. A former olympic skier who ran the world’s most exclusive poker game and got mixed up with the Russian Mafia. Need we say more? 8/10

The Post - Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep team up as owner and editor of the Washington Post in the 1971-set true life story about the leaking of the ‘Pentagon Papers.’ This is post-millennial Spielberg at his politically charged best and a prescient story in this fake news, Trump era. 9/10
